Chinese mining investors in Zimbabwe under scrutiny
THE relationship between Chinese-owned extractive companies and communities in Zimbabwe has deteriorated, becoming increasingly unfriendly, adversarial, and filled with mistrust and suspicion. These findings are from a report by the Centre for Natural Resource Governance (CNRG) titled “Investments or Plunder: An Assessment of the Impacts of Chinese Investments in Zimbabwe’s Extractive Sector” which was launched last Friday in Harare. The report has uncovered disturbing details of how Chinese investors are allegedly extracting the country’s minerals, destroying the land, exposing locals to health hazards, violating labor rights, and sexually abusing women, particularly house helpers.
