Harare, Zimbabwe – Eight people died, and 22 others were injured in 128 road traffic accidents recorded during the Africa Day holiday, police said Tuesday, marking a slight rise in fatal crashes compared to 2024.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) reported a decrease in total accidents from 190 in 2024 to 128 this year, but noted an increase in fatalities, with seven fatal crashes in 2025 compared to six the previous year. The number of people killed rose from seven to eight, while injuries dropped from 35 to 22.

Meanwhile, police have released the names of four victims who died in a separate accident that occurred on 26 May 2025 at the 30-kilometre peg along the Masvingo-Mbalabala Road.

The deceased were identified as Lazarus Takanyara (47) of DISO, Mashava; Albert Gwaimani (47) of C93 Lenox Mine, Mashava; Ashley Zangure (19) of Zangure Village, Ngundu; and Stella Dzingai, a seven-month-old infant from Makono Village, Bikita.

Police have urged motorists to exercise caution and strictly observe road rules, particularly avoiding dangerous overtaking and speeding.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that drivers should adhere to all road rules and regulations to safeguard human lives. Above all, motorists should avoid overtaking when it is not safe to so,” said police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
