A tragic road traffic accident at the 200-kilometre peg along the Harare-Bulawayo Road near Kwekwe claimed 12 lives on Tuesday morning, 27 May 2025.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that a petrol tanker with two trailers, a two-tonne truck, and a Nissan AD Van carrying 12 occupants collided near Sebakwe River.

The tanker first struck the two-tonne truck before colliding head-on with the AD Van, dragging it for several metres before overturning and falling on top of it, he added.

The fuel tanker first hit the two-tonne truck as it was going in the opposite direction. It then had a head-on collision with the AD Van going in the opposite direction.

Subsequently, the tanker dragged the AD Van for several metres and then overturned before falling on top of the AD Van.

The fuel tanker was travelling from Harare towards Kwekwe.

The occupants in the AD Van were trapped inside.

The bodies of the victims were taken to Kwekwe General Hospital for post-mortem.

In the year 2020, at the hight of the Covid 19 pandemic that swept across the world killing thousands of people the first lady Auxilia Munangagwa’ s convoy was also involved in a road traffic accident in the same neighbourhood of Kwekwe.

One of the vehicles in the convoy reportedly hit and critically injured a 7-year-old boy (name withheld) near Simunye Gardens, on a Thursday morning,

Simunye Gardens is located just a kilometre off Kwekwe CBD along the Kwekwe -Harare highway.

“The boy was hit while trying to fetch water across the road,” said a source.

“He was immediately rushed to Kwekwe General Hospital then further transferred to Gweru Provincial hospital where he was promptly admitted,” added the source.

According to her itinerary, the First Lady then was supposed to handover donations in Shurugwi as part of her provincial efforts to cushion citizens and the most vulnerable against the ravaging pandemic Coronavirus at the time.

The previous month on April 20,2020, The First Lady’s convoy was again involved in a fatal accident in Muzarabani, Mavhuradonha Mountain Range, Mashonaland Central after which she continued with her business despite the tragic crash.

The incident killed on the spot one of his trusted top aide, Albert Vunganai.

Four other secret service operatives were seriously injured in the crash.
